March was the beginning of the rainy season in Virginia. The month came in like a lion and went out like a whole pride of lions. That groundhog up in PA called the weather just right, as it was six more weeks of winter. This did not deter the Peninsula Pathfinders and Gators Walking clubs. If it were scheduled, they would come! Featured here are a few pictures of two walks that took place that month.
Mariner Museum in Newport News, VA was the site of our second group walk, of 2004. This is one of the leading nautical museums in the world and the home of the remains of the Ironclad warship USS Monitor. It is a beautiful natural area in the middle of the city of Newport News. The walkers meet promptly at 9AM to register for the walk. |

This was another good size group of about 30 Volksmarchers that walked in spite of threatening weather.

Pat takes charge and tells me to put that camera away and "Let's walk!"
With that, we passed a number of Civil War re-enactors at the museum. I figured to get pictures of them later. About half way through the walk the heavens opened up, the rain came and no more photos were taken.

| Two weeks later many of the Pathfinders would be taking part at the Gators Event at The Norfolk Botanical Gardens. The gardens were just showing the first signs of Spring and it was a really nice day to walk. The first picture in this group shows (L-R) Bob and Jack. The most interesting part of the picture is that Bob walked a 5KM, this day. It was only 8 weeks after he had a complete knee replacement. Go Bob Go!!! |

A highlight of this walk was the nesting eagles at the gardens. The walk had to be changed at the last minutes to give these awesome birds "some space". This picture shows the large nest in the middle of the pine tree. This nest is about the size of a VW beetle.

(L-R) Cheryl and Roccie pose with the eagle nest behind them.

Volksmarchers from across the state come to enjoy the walk in the gardens. (L-R) Pathfinder Barb stops to talk with Dee and Betty of the Richmond area.
|
Pathfinder Cheryl seems to have picked up the pace.

It is only in Norfolk, VA that you will be able to walk the streets and catch a glimpse of a mirmaid.

At least she is staying near the fountain. But really wishes that she could walk with us. SEE YOU ON THE TRAIL! |
